The reality and future of the multi- skilled editor in Journalism schools in Egypt

Technological changes in the field of media have set a new reality in the field of Journalism education all over the world. The present study aims at identifying the reality and future of the multi- skilled editor in j-schools in Egypt considering today’s required skills in digital newsrooms. Three dimensions have been investigated to achieve the aim of this work. First, faculty staff members of the Egyptian Journalism programs to understand their point of view of the developments took place at present and the multi-skilled editor preparation future. Second, students of the Egyptian Journalism programs to learn about the reality of preparing the multi-skill editor. Third, Egyptian journalists to get their views on the graduates of the Egyptian Journalism programs, and potential cooperation between educational and media institutions. A large sengment of the interviewed faculty staff members believed that the present programs were developed in a limited way that do not fit with modern changes. The sample staff members agreed that the partial transformation scenario of the multi-skilled editor is the closest to occure due to the rapid growth of communication technology. While the sample staff members agreed on teaching basic skills, they differed in teaching technological skills in a way that reflects a lack of agreement about the skills needed for the multi-skilled editor. A similar disagreement was present in the students' results. Results showed that public universities focus on basic skills and some modern technological skills, while private universities are interested in providing their students with modern technological skills. Around one third of the journalists sample believed that the level of media graduates is adequate, and most of them believed that their institutions interested in hiring media graduates.
