هدفت الدراسة إلى رصد الإتجاهات البحثية السائدة في مجال استخدام ذوي الاحتياجات الخاصة لوسائل الاتصال والإشباعات المتحققة منها، وتقديم رؤية نقدية للتراث العلمي العربي والأجنبي في مجال استخدام ذوي الاحتياجات الخاصة لوسائل الاتصال والإشباعات المتحققة منها، واکتشاف الموضوعات والقضايا والإشکاليات التي تناولتها هذه الدراسات، والتعرف على الأطر النظرية والفکرية والتصميمات المنهجية المستخدمة، إضافة إلى تقديم رؤية مستقبلية تساعد على سد الثغرات في الإنتاج العلمي، وتطوير الجهود البحثية والأکاديمية، واقتراح أجندة بحوث مستقبلية يمکن للباحثين الاسترشاد بها في الفترة المقبلة بغية تحقيق عنصري الأصالة والإبداع في بحوثنا العربية.
تنتمي الدراسة إلى مجموعة الدراسات الوصفية، وقد اعتمدت على المناهج التالية: (التحليل من المستوى الثاني- المنهج النقدي- منهج المسح- المنهج المقارن)، کما اعتمدت على استمارة تحليل لتطبيق أسلوب التحليل من المستوى الثاني.
واعتمدت الدراسة في تحقيق أهدافها على أسلوب العينة المُتاحة من البحوث والدراسات العربية والأجنبية المنشورة في مجلات علمية ودوريات متخصصة، إضافة إلى الکتب والمؤلفات المنشورة والرسائل الجامعية المنشورة وغير المنشورة، والأوراق العلمية والبحثية المقدمة إلى مؤتمرات محلية ودولية وعالمية، وقد تمثل الإطار الزمني للعينة في فترة الخمس سنوات الأخيرة الماضية (2013- 2018).
انتهت الدراسة لنتائج مهمة، على رأسها: قوة تأثير الإعلام في رفع مفهوم الذات لذوي الاحتياجات الخاصة، وأن استخدام منصات التواصل الاجتماعي الشائعة يمکن أن يکون وسيلة فعالة للوصول إلى هذه المجموعة من الأشخاص ذوي الإعاقة، وقد تبين أن المعاقين يواجهون العديد من العقبات أثناء تصفح الإنترنت وقد تم تطوير العديد من التقنيات القائمة على الأجهزة والبرمجيات لهذا الغرض.
