Abstract

The study aimed to assess the impact of audio description on visually impaired individuals' preferences for engaging with dramatic content. It also sought to understand the methods visually impaired people use to access visual information and evaluate how effectively audio description enhances their comprehension of visual elements. Additionally, the study proposed recommendations for expanding audio description services in Egypt.
To achieve these objectives, a quasi-experimental design was implemented with 40 visually impaired participants, divided into two experimental groups for comparison. Participants completed a pre-exposure questionnaire, viewed film material with audio description, and then evaluated their viewing experience.
Key findings include:

Adolescents and young adults show strong interest in sports and artistic content, with young adults particularly engaged in political and scientific materials.
Participants are exposed to a wide variety of artistic forms, including films, series, sports events, news, and programs.
There is a preference for solitary viewing, reflecting a desire for greater independence.
Visually impaired individuals use various media platforms — mobile devices, television, and computers—to access content.
Young adults watch visual content for longer periods compared to adolescents.
A significant majority of young adults (85%) prefer audio description compared to (75%) of adolescents, demonstrating a strong appreciation for this feature.

The study also found that most participants felt the audio description was well-integrated into the film content, with appropriate speed and sound quality. Overall, young adults reported higher levels of complete satisfaction with the audio description compared to adolescents, who also expressed positive feedback but at a slightly lower level. This indicates that the audio description experience was generally well-received by the participants.
