Attitudes of the Academic Media Elite towards the Impact of Social Media in the Use of Arabic Language

Abstract:
The problem of social media sites and their relationship to the Arabic language is one of the most important issues for those concerned and interested in the linguistic and media affairs in the Arab world in general, where the efforts of researchers are combined in the field of language and media to study and approach them from different dimensions.  This study represents a series of studies centered on this problem. The researcher focuses on the study of one of the important issues closely related to this phenomenon, especially there is a large gap in this regard, which this study tries to bridge. This issue is "Academic media elite attitudes towards the impact of social media in the use of Arabic language". The study found a series of results, most notably:-

The study revealed the diversity of attitudes of the academic media elite towards the impact of social networking sites in the use of Arabic language between the positive trends, specifically with regard to the definition and luminaries of the Arabic language, and contribution to its dissemination. And negative attitudes, specifically with regard to the publication of "hybrid languages" and writing in  impolite and  vulgar language  lacking the common sense; in addition to the dissemination of foreign languages that contribute to the obliteration and forget the Arabic language for users of these sites of youth or the so-called "Digital Generation. “

Concerning the interest of Arab media elites in observing the rules of Arabic language when writing on social media sites, the study showed that the percentage of the interested did not exceed 53.2%. In spite of top rank the interest has in observing the rules of the Arabic language, it does not reflect the role the media elite group should play to preserve and protect the Arabic language from any effects that lead to its vulnerability and degradation. Moreover; the elite (somewhat interested)  that take into account The Arabic rules (grammar) is up to 42.3%, However; there are among them 4.3%.who do not care about the basic Arabic rules (grammar).
One of the controversial results ,this study showed, concerning the interest of the Arab academic media elite to follow the impact of social media sites in the use of Arabic language is that the  interest of the elite is ‘to some extent’ – meaning that they may care or not care-in the first order by 59.6%. While the interest (to a great extent) has come in the second order by only 34%. However, the Arab media elite who do not really care about this problem is 6.4%. What makes this result controversial is that it is contrary to the importance of the elite, which, by virtue of their work, is the most interactive and knowledgeable group of society variables due to the fact that  that their members have many  distinctive characteristics .
