Abstract

This study is concerned with disclosing the arab news satellite channels’ ways of processing the issues of the Kingdom of Bahrain, by monitoring and analyzing the frameworks used by Al Jazeera and Al Arabia news channels to cover the issues of the Kingdom and their impact on the knowledge and trends of the Bahraini public.

The aim of the study is to identify the extent of the coverage given by Arab News Satellite Channels to the news about the Kingdom of Bahrain. It identifies the most prominent issues related to the Kingdom of Bahrain which were covered by these news channels, to highlight the information frames used to cover the news of the Kingdom of Bahrain and to indicate the extent to which the coverage of the most important topics and issues concerning the Kingdom of Bahrain has affected the knowledge of the Bahraini public's trends towards those issues.

The study relied mainly on the content analysis and questionnaire tools for data collection. The analytical aspect included the study, monitoring and analysis of all programmes and news on the issues of the Kingdom of Bahrain on Al Jazeera and Al Arabia news channels during the study period. The field aspect was represented by a random sample of 1000 Bahraini nationals.

The study was based on the main hypothesis of a statistically significant relationship between the frameworks for dealing with the Arab news satellite channels on issues related to the Kingdom of Bahrain and the knowledge and trends of the Bahraini public towards those issues. The study emphasized the validity of this hypothesis. It established a statistically significant correlation between the channel and the news frames used in the material presented about the Kingdom of Bahrain, namely: The conflict, the framework of humanitarian concerns, the framework of responsibility, as well as statistically significant differences in the extent to which the public agrees, their impartiality and their opposition to how the two channels deal with the frameworks when addressing the issues of the Kingdom of Bahrain. The findings confirmed a statistically significant correlation between the extent of exposure to Al Jazeera and Al Arabia news channels and the cognitive, emotional and behavioural effects of public exposure to Bahrain-related issues on the two channels.

The results showed that the most indications in the content of Al Jazeera's coverage of the Kingdom of Bahrain's issues were negative: Mobilization and incitement, followed by the questioning of official statements, the hosting of radical and unacceptable symbols of political and intellectual destinations in Bahraini society, the propagation of hatred and the evoking of epistemology. On the other hand, indications of Al Arabia channel's coverage of the issues related to the Kingdom of Bahrain were positive: Respect for the sovereignty of the Kingdom and its public policy; the focus on the achievements of the Kingdom; the singularity of meetings with high-level official figures; the reliability of the sources.
