Abstract

The current study belongs to the category of comparative studies, utilizing the comparative descriptive approach and the Uses and Effects theory by Rubin and Kim. It aimed to explore the rates, motivations, and positive and negative effects of using the hybrid language among a sample of university students in mobile applications. The study employed a non-random convenient sample, consisting of 400 male and female students from media and arts colleges in Egypt and Saudi Arabia who were already users of mobile applications. The study yielded a range of significant findings, including:

1-The most commonly used hybrid style by the study sample of Egyptian and Saudi students in mobile applications was the Arabizi style, which involves using Arabic with English and Latin characters. It ranked first with a percentage of 75%, divided as follows: 82.3% for Egyptians and 66.1% for Saudis.
2-WhatsApp was found to be the most commonly used application in hybrid language among the study sample of Egyptian and Saudi university students, occupying the first position with a percentage of 82.8%. Following closely behind was Facebook, with a usage rate of 50.2%.
3-The study sample members, consisting of Egyptian and Saudi students, agreed on the negative effects of using Hybrid Language in mobile applications in its three levels, where a percentage of (7.50%) considered it has a highly negative impact, and this percentage is divided as follows: (52.7%) for Egyptians and (48.3%) for Saudis.
4-The study sample members, consisting of Egyptian and Saudi students, also agreed on the positive effects of using Hybrid Language in mobile applications in its three levels, where a percentage of (47%) considered it has a moderately positive impact, and this percentage is divided as follows: (50.5%) for Egyptians and (42.8%) for Saudis.
5-The study found a statistically significant positive correlation but weak between the usage density of the hybrid language among the study sample of Egyptian and Saudi students in mobile applications and its impact favoring positive effects (P value = 0.000 < 0.01), and an inverse (negative) relationship favoring negative effects (P value = 0.032 < 0.05).
6-The study also verified the hypothesis that there are statistically significant differences between the sample members of Egyptian and Saudi students based on their place of residence (urban or rural), in their rates of using Hybrid Language in mobile applications, with urban residents having the highest average use compared to their counterparts in rural areas (P value = 0.023 < 0.05).
In general, our study indicates that the use of Hybrid Language is a social phenomenon that reflects the individual's level of culture, education, and environment. It cannot be judged as positive or negative overall, as it depends on the different circumstances and contexts in which the language is used”.
