Abstract

This qualitative study aims to investigate the role played by social live streaming services to enhance participatory culture, by examining the audio rooms’ service in Baaz application, which is considered the first Arabian social network. The study is based on examining the foundation of participatory culture theory. Data collected by using the Walkthrough method, observation, and in-depth interviews. Purposive sampling was used to collect data from rooms of five audio streamers on Bazz, during January 2023, reached 22 audio rooms. Available sampling was used to collect data from eight streamers as well. The results showed that Bazz audio rooms enhance participatory culture, as it strengthens social bonds between streamer and audience, helps to solve listeners’ problems, disseminates ideas and information, and prompts streamer’s creativity. “Affiliations” was the most supported form of participatory culture within the audio rooms. Based on the findings, there are many Advantages of Bazz audio rooms, such as discussing several subjects in different fields, and providing Arabs with a web based communication tool. However, there are some challenges that may negatively influence Baaz streamers’ intention to publish further content via audio rooms, most notably the app doesn’t provide a way to save audio rooms’ content.
