Public Attitudes towards Social Media Coverage of Environmental Projects in Saudi Arabia: Cloud Seeding as a Model -A survey Study on the Audience of the City of Riyadh

Abstract

This study sought to identify the Saudi public's attitudes towards news coverage of social media platforms for the cloud seeding project in Saudi Arabia, and the impact of this coverage on the public's affective, cognitive, and behavioral attitudes towards it. The importance of this study stems from the limitations of previous scientific studies that measure the public's attitudes towards current environmental projects in Saudi Arabia and the absence of media specialized in environmental issues coverage of these projects. The research questions of this study centered on the relationship between news coverage of social media platforms and the formation of Saudi public’s attitudes towards cloud seeding project according to demographic factors. This study used the quantitative survey method by applying an electronic questionnaire that included several items, which measure the main variables of this study. The questionnaire was distributed among a random sample of Saudi citizens in Riyadh. 384 Saudi people were participated in this study. The results of the study concluded that most of the Saudi people (67%) follows the news coverage of the cloud seeding project in Saudi Arabia. Moreover, the results of the study found that Twitter, WhatsApp, and YouTube topped the list of the most prominent social media platforms whose news coverage the Saudi public follows to form their attitudes toward the cloud seeding project in Saudi Arabia.
 The study revealed that following up on the latest developments and striving to increase scientific knowledge of societal issues and personal interests were the most prominent motivations of the Saudi people to follow the news coverage of social media platforms about cloud seeding project. With regard to attitudes، the study showed a (positive) relationship between the Saudi public's use of news coverage of social media platforms to follow news related to the cloud seeding project in Saudi Arabia and the audience's affective، cognitive and behavioral attitudes towards the cloud seeding project, respectively.The study recommended intensifying scientific research on issues of specialized environmental media that the public needs to build their knowledge and awrencess about developments in the environmental sector in Saudi Arabia.
