Abstract

This is a descriptive, explanatory study, which sought to monitor and analyze the attitudes of a number of Saudi businessmen, i.e., study sample members, towards printed newspapers' position on the Privatization Program. The study relied on its theoretical framework and its questions on Media Dependency Theory.
The results of the study revealed that more than half of the businessmen in Riyadh region (the study sample) depend on printed newspapers to learn about economic news to a medium degree. Moreover, the results indicated that 14.2% of the businessmen who participated in the study depend on printed newspapers to get acquainted with news related to the privatization program (to a large degree), while 27.7% of them depend on printed newspapers for the same reason (to a medium degree). Finally, 58.2% of the Saudi businessmen who participated in the study depend on printed newspapers (to a weak degree). These results shed light on businessmen’s dissatisfaction with Saudi printed newspapers’ methods of tackling the topics related to the privatization program.
The results of the study demonstrated that the most prominent motives behind Saudi businessmen (i.e. study sample) dependence on printed newspapers are: the need to obtain more information on privatization program; followed by learning about the privatization program and its economic benefits. However, the most important topic observed by Saudi businessmen in printed newspapers was based on (Investment opportunities) in the first place. Nonetheless, on top of the list of the topics searched for as businessmen expected to be in printed newspapers came the topics: (deep explanation of the objectives of the privatization program) and (following up on investment opportunities that arise from privatization processes and writing about them) as they were more relevant to knowledge and information needs of the businessmen who participated in the study.
In addition, the results of the study showed that the most prominent weaknesses and obstacles that reduce Saudi printed newspapers’ performance about tackling the topics related to privatization program from the point of view of the businessmen (the study sample) were: (Scarcity of privatization topics in general), and (lack of the topics which discuss investment opportunities arising from privatization processes in general) persuasive). Further, the results showed the importance of (assigning specific and regular pages for these topics where the privatization program can be better addressed and discussed).
