Analysis of the Value System in the Dramatic Series shown on Paid Video Streaming Services: A Comparative Study between "Miss Farah" and "Jane the Virgin"

Abstract

The study aims to analyze the values ​​presented in the foreign series "Jane the Virgin" and its Egyptian adaptation "Miss Farah", to identify the differences in the values and behaviors in terms of cultural and societal values. To conduct this descriptive study, the researcher uses the content analysis form as a data gathering tool applying it to all the episodes of the American drama series "Jane the virgin" (100 episodes) and its Egyptian adaptation "Miss Farah" (110 episodes). Schwartz's Theory of Basic Human Values is applied in this study.
Main results:
Regarding the negative behaviors presented by the dramatic characters in the two series; "Lying" comes in the first place at (71.3%), then “deception” in the second place at (63.4%), followed by “selfishness” in the third place (62.4%), while "homosexuality" and "neglecting work" come at the last place by (7.9%) for each.
 

The dramatic characters in the two series present different forms of relationships between men and women; "love and emotional relationship" comes at the first place by (35.6%), then "official marriage" in the second place by (30.7%), while "pregnancy due to a medical error and keeping the baby" comes at the final place by (2%).

The two series deal with the value of achievement; “Ambition” comes in the first place at (70.3%), then “efficiency” in the second place at (51.5%), followed by “influencing others” at (40.6%).
