The Exposure of the Egyptian Youth to the Digital Political Content and Its Relationship to Build Their Perceptions toward the Future of Their Political and Economic Empowerment

Abstract

The Egyptian leadership has focused -since 2014 -on the empowerment of young people and work on continuous communication between the state and the youth. President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi declared 2016 the year of the Egyptian youth to be the beginning of the presidential program to qualify young people for leadership. These events attracted the attention of the digital media, and discussions dominated the political and social participation of youth, and their role in sustainable development plans represented in Egypt’s Vision 2030. This study discussed the role of digital media in supporting the political and economic empowerment of youth, and aimed to determine the degree of their awareness of empowerment mechanisms, strategies and various dimensions, and thus the research problem can be formulated as follows: What is the relationship of Egyptian youth’s exposure to political content through digital media to building their perceptions and expectations about the future of their political and economic empowerment? The current study is a field study, which used a questionnaire to collect the data. A descriptive study relied on the media survey method, and used Habermas’ theory of the public sphere, as well as the interactivity model and the social expectations theory.
The results showed that "Facebook" came at the forefront of the social networks that respondents always rely on for information about youth empowerment. The results also showed a strong knowledge of the youth empowerment strategies accomplished by the Egyptian government.
