Critical analysis of the discourse of medical programs on Egyptian satellite channels

Abstract

This study aimed to identify and critically examine the medical discourse of television programs, deconstruct it, and extrapolate its multiple theses and the motives for these theses and issues, the degree of connection of the medical discourse to its small and broad contexts, and the nature of the authority behind this discourse and the types and types of active forces in it. In this context, the method of critical analysis of the media discourse of medical programs was used, and the “Doctor” program was chosen as a deliberate sample representative of medical programs over three months: October, November, and December 2023. The study concluded with the following results:
- The thesis or category of cosmetics and performance improvement topped the list of topics or theses, and the thesis on childhood and motherhood came in second place, and third place was the thesis or category of sexual health, marital relations, and related matters, while the category of chronic diseases and methods of treatment for them came.
- Several general and comprehensive features dominated the medical discourse in general, including The discourse relies on scientific and medical terminology, as well as scientific reliability and certainty.
- A group of active forces dominated in directing the medical discourse. This includes the dominance of advertising and advertising, which is linked to the dominance of the consumer culture that characterizes the era and is consistent with the capitalist nature of promoting doctors, medical services, and pharmaceutical companies, as well as scientific, cultural, and ideological authority. This was evident in the category of cosmetics and performance enhancement, in particular, technology and its enormous influence, as was evident in all categories of medical discourse.
- The paths of proof and persuasion strategies used in the structure of medical discourse combine rationalism or scientific evidence.
