Abstract

This paper aims to analyze the media framing of news coverage of the Hajj in the international media, by analyzing the coverage of the CNN and BBC News sites of the Hajj season. The study analyzes the type of frames used, the language used to depict the context of events, and images, while discussing the reasons for framing and its impact on audiences’ perceptions, previous literature on the topic, and in light of the theory of media frame analysis as a theoretical framework for the study. The study aims to answer the main question: What are the media frameworks followed by international media organizations in presenting and covering Hajj news?
This paper applied a descriptive approach, which focuses on collecting data about the case, and then analyzing, and delivering conclusions about the case. The results show that both sites CNN and BBC used many media frameworks in covering the Hajj. CNN focused on covering the Hajj within an economic framework by focusing on the economic issues related to the Hajj, while the BBC focused on the humanitarian aspects and responsibility involved in the Hajj. In general, it was noted that the two networks tended to show the negative sides - from their perspective - and to amplify them, neglecting to mention the positives and the successes achieved by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in managing crowds and organizing the Hajj every year. Several recommendations were delivered in the paper.
